Training foundations: the first commands
Five simple commands every new dog owner should teach — and how to keep it fun.
Start with trust
Training isn't just about commands — it's the language you and your dog share. Keep sessions short (5 min), positive, and frequent.
The core five
- Name — say it, reward eye contact. Repeat everywhere.
- Sit — lure nose up with a treat, bottom drops. Mark + reward.
- Recall (come) — say the name + "come", reward generously when they arrive. Never punish a dog for coming.
- Stay — ask for a sit, hold your palm out, wait one second, reward. Build duration slowly.
- Leave it — treat in one closed hand, let them sniff; the moment they look away, reward from the other hand.
